British pick Bach

Bach walked away with the title of Britain's favourite classical composer in a poll conducted recently by the BPI.

The results were drawn from an online survey of more than 3,600 visitors to the websites of participating classical record companies.

No room for Schubert in the otherwise unsurprising full top ten, selected from a list of 54 names:

• Mahler                   6.3% 
• Tchaikovsky        3.6% 
• Handel                   3.5% 
• Verdi                      3.3%
