Cue the sound of scraped barrels. The Royal Opera House's imminent revival of La fille du régiment will feature none other than Tory trouper Ann Widdecombe in the role of Duchesse de Crackentorp.
I was hoping for Rupert Murdoch in drag

Oh good grief.......

I presume Christine Hamilton was double booked then.

Strewth! She'd be more of a loose cannon than Edna Everage ...

OMG Will it be Russell Grant as the Duchess in Alice?

A thought occurs to me - could the lovely Ann come across problems with Equity? Is there an opera equivalent?

Oh hell! Considering giving my ticket back...
Why can't ROH do what many European houses have done with this role, and give it to a retired soprano?
Intermezzo replies - because they'd probably want money instead of peanuts.

What about the lovely Joanna Lumley? I'm sure she could Patsy it up delightfully!
Intermezzo replies - probably far too smart to accept the job.

Shorn of Dessay and Florez and now with the ghastly Widdecombe instead of Dawn French, this revival is looking increasingly desperate. The public also seem to be voting with their feet, judging by the vast swathes of unsold tickets for each night.
Think I'll give it a miss, even when the inevitable discounts kick in

Please tell me its 1st April.

Business trips caused me to miss the last two revivals of this. Shall I bother attending - hmmm, might see how I feel nearer the time. With the loads of unsold seats left I wonder if it would be worth the hassle in returning them!

Hmm - not sure it'd make me buy a ticket, but if ticket sales are as slow as Jon says, this looks a better than fair effort at getting some 'bums on seats' given her high profile following Strictly. Quite nice to see the House being a bit commercial !

Hasn't her profile faded somewhat since she was on Strictly? That was so 2010, wasn't it? Maybe the next time they do Fledermaus they'll cast John Sargent as Frosch.

Is Widdy THAT short of money? It's seems almost worth going to see how bad it is? She's tricked out her rent-a-battleaxe routine for an amazingly long time. I suppose it all adds to the gaiety of the nation and at least she's not actively conniving in the destruction of the NHS.

After "Strictly" I hear she is being considered as Odette/Odile. What is the Royal Opera House coming too?
