The last opera premiere of this year's Salzburg Festival takes place this evening, when Die Soldaten opens.
Alvis Hermanis has set his new production (shared with La Scala) in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, omitting the tapes and film clips specified by Bernd Alois Zimmermann.
Once again, Zurich regulars are prominent amongst the cast, which includes Laura Aikin and Alfred Muff.

The opera is staged in the Felsenreitschule, built as stables, so the production's seven horses should feel at home. Here one of them gets ready for a rehearsal with Laura Aikin:
