...........here's the next best thing. Anna Netrebko and Matthew Polenzani perform Poiché non sono amato at the dress rehearsal for L'elisir d'amore, which opens the Met season tonight. Now what's all that about dropping the -inas?
On first glance looks more like Carmen and Don Jose rather than Adina and Nemorino. She's definitely grown out of the 'inas.

He is really bad (no charisma, ugly voice, shouting) I don't understand how he can sings at the MET. The MET doesn't have, in recent times, good judgment with the tenors.

Anna is just gorgeous ... Hopefully it will be another triumph of her in a few hours

She's an amazing actress, which puts her over the top when her singing doesn't already.

I really do agree with Siggy and Carla: It looks like Carmen and the tenor is horrible. If you want to enjoy a wonderful Elisir just watch a DVD from Vienna with Netrebko and Villazon. Old but good !

Yes, Anna clearly outshines her wooden, pedestrian tenor. Where’s JDF when you need him?!

Joan Sutherland sang with tenors half her size, too, once Pavarotti's career took off. I saw her in Don Giovanni and she was enormous, like an ocean liner being led around by a tiny little pilot boat of a Don Ottavio. I was stunned.

Yes, she indeed looks like Carmen. But sorry, Anna Netrebko is no longer an Adina. The voice is too heavy for this kind of repertoire now.
Whatever the tenor is singing, I wouldn't call it Belcanto. Joseph Calleja is simply the finest Nemorino these days. Why hasn't the MET hired the Maltese Tenor instead?

Good question. Surely the Met. can find a more suitable Nemorino than this. I don't like Polenzani's voice and he lacks the appealingly vulnerable qualities of a good Nemorino. Unlikely though it may seem, Alagna was once an excellent Nemorino in an old Opéra de Lyon production.

Alagna is the ROH Nemorino in November/December - we'll see how the voice is faring given his excursions into heavier rep.
