Elizabeth Peyton: "Carmen, Jonas Kaufmann (2)", 2011, monotype on handmade paper (© 2012: Elizabeth Peyton and Regen Projects, Los Angeles)
Remember Elizabeth Peyton's Wagner exhibition at the Met?
Now showing at the Staatliche Kunsthalle Baden-Baden is Here She Comes Now, a selection of Peyton's portraits of musicians. Most of the subjects are from the pop world - but it seems the artist's eye was caught by a certain tenor. Representing opera is Jonas Kaufmann, as captured in the Ring, Carmen and Lohengrin.
An exhibition flyer and book (£34) are available if you can't get to the show.

I'm afraid not even the theme would make me buy this.

I remember some absolutely ghastly paintings of singers that they had for sale as prints in the ROH shop a few years ago. Was that a different "artist"?

Is she blackmailing someone? Because this art is no different from what gets mailed to actors and singers (of all kinds) every day from fans. Sketch or painting from photos/stills. I wouldn't be surprised if some of your own readers hadn't done something similar long long ago. In the same age when you have posters up on your walls.

Not very wonderful art if it makes a thin guy look jowly.

And just think: she designed posters for the Ring operas that covered a good half of the Met's vast façade, dominating the whole visual aspect of Lincoln Center. With dreck.

I think Elizabeth Peyton only did the Walküre banner. I know Peter Doig did Siegfried and the other two banners look completely different in style. Not that any of them looked that great to me.

Come to think of it, it's been a long time since the Met had any posters that inspired an "I want that!" from me. The Met Shop is still cruising on that Turandot illo from how many years ago?
