The ground floor of Dresden's Semperoper was evacuated earlier tonight for fear of flooding. Torrential rain in Germany over the last few days has made the River Elbe burst its banks. Many parts of Dresden and surrounding areas are already under water. The lake you see above used to be a road. Water levels have risen even further since the picture was taken in the middle of the day.
The historic opera house, in the centre of the picture above, lies a little higher. But with flood levels projected to rise to anywhere between 7 and 9 metres, local people have pulled together to surround it with 3,500 sand bags (below).
Despite the disaster, so far only one performance has been cancelled.
