Jonas Kaufmann was tonight awarded the prestigious title of Bayerischer Kammersänger. The surprise award was made on stage in Munich, straight after his performance in Il trovatore. There's no equivalent to a Kammersänger in English, but recipients can anticipate the warm glow a British singer might feel after being awarded an OBE.
The title is given not just for being a top singer, but for going above and beyond the call of Bavarian State Opera duty. Such as - commiting to a shedload of role premieres there, even though you're in demand all over the world. Last minute subbing for a sick colleague, even though you've got your own broadcast coming up. Singing while tied to a chair. Wearing 'that' waistcoat.
Jonas is pictured above with the rest of the Von Addams family after the 5 July Il trovatore broadcast.
