I don't see the attraction of Miss Opolais. She has a very unattractive voice. She screams at the top and her lower register was inaudible last night. I doubt I'll be joining the scrum for tickets for Manon Lescaut this summer. She has the potential to ruin it.

Well I suppose these things are in the ear of the beholder, but whatever technical shortcomings Mme. Nelsons might or might not have at either end of her range, the very last thing I would ever expect to see or hear said of her is that she "has a very unattractive voice".
To me, it's middling gorgeous, and in the right repertory - not, to my mind, Puccini - she's really rather wonderful...
Not apropos, am I the only person amazed at the development of Malin Bystrom's voice as heard in the ROH's very iffy new Don Giovanni?
