When ENO start discounting shows before they even open, it generally means ticket sales have been poor, and you can expect further discounts down the line.
Your Dr Dee opener is this offer for Upper Circle/Rear Dress seats at half price (£29.50 instead of £59) from Time Out, a repeat/extension of their earlier offer.
If you're tempted to take it up, Upper Circle seats (unless they're right at the back) will have a better view and sound than Rear Dress.
English National Opera can't have much faith in Damon Albarn's ability to put bums on seats. They've already starting discounting his 'opera' Dr Dee, even though it doesn't open for three months.
It’s a stretch (if not a downright cheek) to call Damon Albarn’s Dr Dee an opera – even if the composer does take a Tosca-style plunge from the battlements at the very end. Labels like rock musical don’t fit well either though. Built around vignettes from the life of the Elizabethan mathematician/magician Dr John Dee, it’s an odd hybrid. With a mixture of musical styles, no clear narrative line and surprisingly little singing, it flits from scene to scene without ever settling on anything like a theme, a structure or a story. Something like MTV in other words. And it’s amplified to the point where the volume itself becomes a defining feature.
In what is turning out to be a busy month for new work, Damon Albarn's Dr Dee: An English Operapremieres tonight in Manchester. Here are some rehearsal photos, an interview feature, and a taste of the music with full orchestra.
