According to the press release.
For medical reasons, Mariss Jansons has had to pull out of the Berlin Philharmonic's next group of concerts: 8, 9 and 10 May 2013 in Berlin, and 12 May in Amsterdam. His replacement is Jaap van Zweden, pictured above at the age of 20, when he was the youngest-ever Concertmaster of the Concertgebouw.
But what about the 2018 chief conductor vacancy? Despite a storming Proms debut and the odd appearance with the LPO, Van Zweden remains as much under the radar in Germany as in the UK - this will be his Berlin Philharmonic debut. Not so in the US, where he has been music director of the Dallas Symphony since 2008 and conducted most of the other major orchestras, picking up a 2012 Conductor of the Year Award along the way. His broad repertoire, acknowledged expertise in Mahler and Bruckner, and orchestra-honing skills are not Simon Rattle's greatest strengths.
Expect another name to slip on to the Nelsons/Thielemann-headed list in a few days.
