Tête à Tête: The Opera Festival hits Hammersmith's Riverside Studios on 1 August for its seventh year. It specialises in short new works - plan your evening carefully, and you could fit in up to three on the same night. All cost £7.50, except for my pick of the bunch - Indigestion, "a restaurant-based musical in which you will explore the lives of your fellow diners." Tickets for this are £22.50 but include a three-course meal from the excellent Riverside kitchens. I also like the look of The Garden, which takes place in "a secret location".
Its East London rival is Grimeborn, hosted by the Arcola Theatre in Dalston. This has a broader scope, mixing cut-down classics with the programme of new works. Pelléas et Mélisande, Dido and Aeneas and Monteverdi's Lamento from L'Arianna are on the bill along with some more experimental offerings - including a few crossovers from Tête à Tête. Tickets are £15, with discounts for booking two or more dates.
