The indefatigable Per-Erik of Wagneropera.net has asked a selection of Wagnerites - including me - to name their five favourite Wagner CDs or DVDs.
More eminent names polled include Hans Jürgen Syberberg, Hartmut Haenchen, Lioba Braun, Kasper Bech Holten, Dame Anne Evans and Iréne Theorin (I am honoured and beyond!)
No clear winners emerge, but the list - here - makes fascinating reading nonetheless.
I know you specifically restricted yourself to the active, but I'm stunned that no one mentioned the potted Schorr Meistersinger on Symposium. One of those albums that redefines one's idea of what singing can do and be.
Similarly the potted Ring -- where one encounters Schorr, Leider, Melchior, Andresen et al. in their scarcely-believable glory -- is only mentioned as a tempo corrective! Gack.

Quite a lot of Solti in there. I'm rather pleased about that.

I see that Peter Konwitschny has no one's work to recommend who isn't also named Konwitschny, oh, except for that one Boulez recording. That does a lot for his credibility, you bet.
