Some unexpected results emerge from a recent US survey into attitudes across the age divide.
69% of the subjects polled felt that young and old were "very different" in the music they like. I guess that's what many of us would say.
But the statistics, at least as far as they apply to classical music, show the difference might not be so great after all.
As the table below shows (double click on it to open a larger version), 14% of 16-29 year olds claimed they listened to classical music "often". The corresponding figure for 50-64 year olds is perhaps surprisingly almost the same at 15%. Only at 65+ years does the percentage rise to 23%. The generation with the least affection for classical music is the 30-49 age group at 12%.
Classical music can also take heart from the statistic (see table below) that 50% of those surveyed listen to it "often" or "sometimes" - that's more than hip-hop.
