Angela Gheorghiu maintains her fabled cancellation record with the news that she has withdrawn from the Royal Opera House's Japanese tour, which starts next month.
Her manager Jack Mastroianni said:
"A few weeks ago, Angela Gheorghiu's daughter Ioana underwent surgery in London that unexpectedly developed complications. Despite efforts by specialists to correct the problem without further surgery, a second operation has been deemed essential and is scheduled in Bucharest for the coming days. As the operation will be invasive, the surgeons have requested that Ms. Gheorghiu remain with her daughter during the operation and recovery periods."
Her place in La traviata will be taken by Ermonela Jaho.
(many thanks to Kyoko S for the advice)
Well, at least this is a good excuse for a change! On similar - more worrying - note, the Vienna State Opera has just announced that Rolando's two Bohemes in Vienna will be sung by Stephen Costello. Is he really planning to sing Cavaradossi, as he told the Vienna press, next season? Or any time?

O, Angela! Well, it her daughter is having health problems she should be with her. I still cringe every time she cancels. When will they just stop engaging her?

Is it actually worth the bother booking tickets for her Adriana Lecouvreur in December when she will most likely cancel and that godawful trainwreck of a soprano called Ángeles Blancas will fill her shoes? I really can't make my mind up. Why should I bother parting with my hard-earned money Mr Avory, and book a trip from continental Europe to London, including hotel and restaurant expenses when the lady might simply not turn up? I address my query to Mr Avory because he seems to be the person in charge of public relations at the Grand Old Lady of Bow Street.

Ermonela Jaho sang only the 1st act in tonight's premiere - the remaining 2 Acts being sung by Ailyn Perez who was stunning in the role, making her ROH Debut 2 years ahead of schedule when she will sing Violetta opposite her husband's Alfredo.
George Avory's recent comments do not represent the general views of the ROH; in fact most of us don't even know who he is!
