From Die Zeit: Germany's orchestras in cartographic form (click to enlarge).
As the accompanying article makes clear, there's no other country where orchestras are quite so evenly distributed, geographically speaking. No wonder so many Germans appreciate classical music. It's so much easier when it's right there on your doorstep.
*sigh* What an embarrassment of riches, all within a 3-4 hour train ride if you're centrally located (say, Frankfurt). Plus, those small towns often take chances on repertory that the big places like Bayerische Staatsoper or Staatsoper Berlin don't/won't.

Just reinforces the connection between the availibility of live concerts and interest in classical music/opera

My local opera house is doing Cardillac now, which is certainly not something you hear everyday. Will comment on the *quality* after I go next month.
It's nice to have something available locally, as 3-4 hour train rides notwithstanding, it's really not that practical to go elsewhere mid-week if you have to work the following day, so it's a choice of regional opera/concert or nothing.
