You want wallpaper? Bricks? A ceiling or two? Il trittico opened the Royal Opera House's 2011-12 season tonight. A different set designer was employed for each of the three operas, but somehow the familiar fingerprints of director Richard Jones are evident throughout.
First up, Il tabarro, designed by Ultz and featuring Lucio Gallo, Eva-Maria Westbroek and Aleksandrs Antonenko:
Suor Angelica is designed by Miriam Buether with Ermonela Jaho in the title role and Anna Larsson as the Princess. Jones has transplanted the story from a convent to a hospital.
Gianni Schicchi, designed by John Macfarlane, has already had a couple of outings in the company of L'Heure Espagnole. This time round Lucio Gallo takes the title role, with Ekaterina Siurina, Francesco Demuro, Elena Zilio, Gwynne Howell and Rebecca Evans in support.
All photos by Bill Cooper for Royal Opera House.
Looks like poor Eva-Maria has to wear the wallpaper in Il tabarro.

Did Westbroek get to keep the prosthetic boobs from her last role?

I don't remember Westbroek being this chunky around the middle earlier this year. Pregnant, or just eating well and dressed poorly?

A great evening and the most memorable start to as season since...well I can't remember. Andrei Serban's 'Turandot' in 1984 maybe? Any advances on that??

Sheila, I don't think Eva-Maria has too much to say about the way she's being dressed here. And don't you think she has the right to decide for herself whether she'll have the looks of Anna Nicole or someone else? I wouldn't worry too much about the way she looks. She has had surgery and let's just be glad she's back again.
