I'd love to hear the rationale of pairing Boulez' music with a Beethoven symphony cycle, it's a disservice to both composers.
Some interesting vocal stuff: a nicely cast Gurrelieder, Elgar's The Apostles, Peter Grimes, Nixon in China etc.

I'm interested that Messiaen's Turangalila is no longer a work that stands by itself in concert without fillers. Is the tide turning & we're going back to a time where concerts routinely last 5 hours?
**********************************************
Intermezzo replies - we certainly seem to have had more of these long Proms since Roger Wright took over. I suspect it's mostly done to give the BBC more material to play with, and therefore reduce the cost to the BBC per broadcast hour of the Proms (since a 3 hour concert costs little more than a 2 hour one to produce). Most Proms decisions are made with the BBC's broadcasting needs firmly to the fore.

Some really good things this year, especially the West-East Divan /Barenboim series plus the Berliner Philharmoniker and the Vienna Phil twice each, but isn't this the most dreary opening night ever?
Posted by: Richard Carter | 20 April 2012 at 09:59 PM
A pity your listing has a number of programmes shown incomplete, particularly towards the end of the season. Both Berlin Phil concerts show only one item as does the Last Night and there's no indication of the performers, but then the Beeb's presentation of the season is less than perfect.
Glad I booked for the Royal Opera Otello on one of the Barenboim Beethoven Boulez nights. I shall avoid the others as well!
**************************************
Intermezzo replies - I don't take any credit for the above list - it's the BBC's. They deliberately supply incomplete information to 'encourage' you to purchase the official BBC version. You could cobble together your own list from the individual pages, but who has time for that?

Just booked for it: the system worked superbly, it 'came live' at 09.00 and I was No 137 in the queue but it went down rapidly and by 09.10 I had booked the five I wanted. So well done BBC/RAH!
***************************************
Intermezzo replies - the system worked superbly *for you* - but you were lucky. I too attempted to log in at 9.00 and couldn't even get into the queue until ten minutes later. I didn't reach the front until 10.00. I've heard of other people who waited even longer, who were kicked out of the queue halfway through, etc, etc. The system is no better than the old ROH system (in fact it's the same software).

Thanks for the link. Will use this to 'follow along from home' as it were (in US). Someday I'll make it to at least one!
Posted by: FragendeFrau | 12 May 2012 at 04:35 PM
I had IM's experience: two people and 4 computers at 2 different addresses all trying to log-in at 9am - took 15 mins for the first person to get into the queue which was by then at 2500 - reached the front of the queue at 10.25am ....
So it really is just luck.
Posted by: Kit | 12 May 2012 at 10:43 PM
Gosh, I really was lucky, I'd blithely assumed that everyone else got the same deal. I hope you got the tickets you were looking for!
