When I got my first iPhone, I was told to think of it not as a phone, but as a small computer. Would we have minded if Pape had turned up with the libretto on an iPad instead of a bit of paper? This is just neater, smaller and completely practical.
The only problem that might have arisen would be someone telephoning Pape just at that very moment.
It's the 21st century, folks!

Helmut Deutsch an Jonas Kaufmann used an iPad in California for the x. encore last year.

I'd find this a lot more endearing if his stage manner were less misanthropic!
