There's one question that readers never tire of emailing, and it's this one. What do you wear to the opera?
My usual answer is whatever you like, as long as it doesn't involve beachwear. But now with ENO telling us to dress down and Covent Garden telling us to dress up the issue has become more complicated.
Fortunately the disposable fashion behemoth ASOS.com have created knitwear for every operatic occasion. Just pair one of their ~now massively reduced~ jumpers with your jeans/lounge suit/tutu.
Here's a selection.
Above, the Stalls Seat with Champagne Voucher Jumper.
Below, the Elixir of Roberto Alagna Jumper.
The Lohengrin Meets Parsifal jumper could double up for ballet duty.
Don't ask where the Guys' Lohengrin Jumper comes from though. Here's another his'n'hers option. First, the All-Purpose Britten Jumper. Which goes nicely with the Only Woman in Billy Budd Jumper. The Pub Opera Barber of Seville Jumper.
The David Mellor's Plus-One Jumper. The Cellphone 'Incident' Jumper. The Cunning Petite-Sized Vixen Jumper. The Multi-Lingual Subtitles Available Jumper.
The Unexpected Seat Upgrade Jumper. The Minotaur Synopsis Jumper. The Mimi-me Jumper. Finally here's one you may never get the chance to wear. The OMG Angela Gheorghiu Actually Turned Up Jumper.
Highly amusing, even a little useful. I prefer to 'dress up' when going to the opera, its fun for me, and then i (because i can do without bringing unnecessary attention to oneself) don't stick out like a sore thumb. Besides people can be hardly noticeable when one goes to the opera. Half of these examples i wouldn't notice if they were sitting next to oneself.
