This is the scene in Frankfurt today, where the WWF have placed 1,600 pandalikes outside the opera house - the same as the number of Giant Pandas that now exist in the wild.

With regard to another endangered species, that is also the number of rhinos killed in South Africa in 2 years.

But that building is not the Frankfurt opera house. It ceased to be so when the Royal Air Force redesigned it in 1944. Its replacement is far less grand.

Intermezzo replies - Frankfurt has two opera houses. The one pictured is called the Alte Oper, or old opera house. The fact that it is no longer home to Oper Frankfurt doesn't change that fact.

The Alte Opera is still actively used for concerts and other performances. The newer Opernhaus was opened, I believe, in 1987. It is of pleasing modern design and has an acoustically-good auditorium that seats about 1200.
